The right time to sell?
“A man with one watch always knows
the correct time,
A man with two watches is
never sure”
Despite most watch collectors having
only two wrists, an increasing
number of them appear only too
willing to expand the size of their
collections at a time when investing
in something of quality and that
actually exists has never made more
sense.
When an empty Rolex box can
command £100 at auction it is time
to start looking through the
dressing table drawer and in the
bedside cabinet to see just what
un-worn and un-loved wristwatches
are there just waiting for a new
owner to get them ticking once
again.
Whether they are actually
working or not is largely
inconsequential and it would be
unusual for us to recommend a vendor
having any work done prior to
selling a watch at auction.

Rolex Submariner
£41,500 |
|

Rolex Milgauss
£16,800 |
Clevedon Salerooms have an enviable
record when it comes to selling
vintage wristwatches.
When a late 1950s Rolex
Submariner sold in these rooms in
2010 for £41,500 to a Hong Kong
buyer, collectors, dealers and
vendors from around the world took
note.
Since then a Rolex Milgauss
anti-magnetic stainless cased
wristwatch designed for use in areas
with high magnetic fields such as
power stations sold for £16,800.
Vintage wristwatches have become
like vintage cars with collectors
arguing over the relative merits of
one brand over another. While Rolex
may to many be the name at the top
of the pyramid, to others there
exists a higher rarefied range of
precision watchmakers whose
aficionado look down their noses at
Rolex as not nearly exclusive
enough.

When watches can command the price
of a car it becomes apparent that it
is much easier for a wealthy
collector to find space for another
watch in their collection, a sports
car takes a lot more room and is
harder to hide from a partner!
Of course, the one thing that all
these collectors have in common,
wherever in the world they are
located, is the desire to have the
best they can possibly afford.
When a market has a
prevalence of collectors for whom
price is often of little
consequence, the opportunities for
vendors become particularly
exciting.
