Battered Salmon leap to £9,900
Salerooms November Specialist Sale was lead by this pair of 19th
Century carved painted fish. With damage to the tail fins and
craquelure to the painted surface the fish were not as fresh as they
might have been. A pool of determined bidders took the bait of
an estimate that reflected their condition, but very few onlookers expected
the winning bidder to land the catch at £9,900!
Providing further raised eyebrows was the collection
of photo albums compiled by the Rev Francis John Griffith who was working
as a missionary in Northern China and Mongolia in the 1920s. The
market for such items has grown dramatically in recent years but all were
surprised when a bidder parted with £4,700 for the unique collection.
Feathers were ruffled when a new record auction price
was established for the Andrew Beer oil on canvas depicting three racing
pigeons that made it home with the bidder paying £2,700. The
section included a fine Victorian garnet, diamond and pearl set pendant
that sold for £3,700. Whilst the pound may be weak for Brits
travelling abroad, on-line bidders from around the world used it to their
advantage with many overseas on-line bidders including furniture being
purchased by a bidder in Australia and a teaset going to Vietnam!
